President of El Salvador Visits BFSU and Receives Honorary Doctoral Degree

On December 4, El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele paid a visit to BFSU. He was granted a honorary doctoral degree and delivered a speech at a special ceremony.

The ceremony was chaired by BFSU Vice President Yan Guohua. Salvadoran President Bukele and his wife Gabriela De Bukele, Economy Minister Maria Luisa Hayem, Agriculture Minister Pablo Anliker, Tourism Minister Morena Valdez, Deputy Director-General Lan Hu ( Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China), BFSU President Yang Dan, and Vice President Yan Guohua attended the ceremony.

BFSU President Yang Dan welcomed the delegation on behalf of Wang Dinghua, BFSU University Council Chairman, and all BFSU teachers and students. He described the presidential visit as a symbol of friendship and people-to-people exchanges between China and EL Salvador. He hoped that this visit would serve as a beginning for more exchanges between our two countries in different fields for the wellbeing of people as well as stronger friendship.  

Yang Dan also briefed the guests about the history and achievement of BFSU and the development of the Spanish language program in BFSU. He said that President Bukele’s visit and acceptance of the honorary doctoral degree from BFSU were an honour for BFSU. He invited President Bukele to visit again in the future as a BFSU alumnus and contribute to closer ties between BFSU and El Salvador as well as the development of the Center for Latin American Studies of BFSU.

Yan Guohua read out the degree conferring decision by State Council Academic Degree Commission, and Yang Dan presented the certificate to President Bukele.

President Bukele then delivered a speech. He briefed the audience about El Salvador as a nation, its people and unique geographical location. According to him, El Salvador and China, connected by the Pacific ocean, both have people that are courageous and hardworking as well as governments that enjoy popular support. He wished for stronger ties between China and El Salvador and other Latin American nations.

Bukele spoke positively about China’s role in globalization and pointed out the need for closer ties between nations and multilateral cooperation in the process of globalization featured by more convenient communications, in order to address problems of industrial overcapacity, poverty and inequality. He called on everyone to contribute to a world without hunger and poverty. He also expressed his wish for closer cooperation between El Salvador and China in the post-globalization era.

After the speech, Yang presented to the Salvadorian President as a gift a work of calligraphy by Shi Wen, a student of Spanish major at BFSU, to express our hope for long-lasting friendly relations between our two countries.  

Over 300 people attended the ceremony, including members of the Salvadoran delegation, BFSU teachers and students, and some Salvadoran students studying in China.
