Graduate School of Translation and Interpreting

The Graduate School of Translation and Interpreting of Beijing Foreign Studies University was founded in 1994, based on the former UN Program for Interpreters and Translators launched in 1979. So far we have produced more than 700 professional interpreters and translators who work for UN agencies and Chinese organizations. Our School enjoys a good reputation worldwide with a long tradition and excellent performance in interpreter and translator training. We maintain close partnerships with the UN agencies as well as other international organizations. We also give tests commissioned by the UN to Chinese interpreters and translators who apply for positions in the UN system. We also offer advanced interpreter and translator training courses for organizations and businesses from Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore as well as for Chinese organizations and businesses such as WTO-China Program, Agricultural Bank of China, China National Petroleum Corporation, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region government and so on.

The School has 22 full-time teachers, 3 part-time professors from other schools of BFSU and 2 visiting professors from other universities. All of our full-time teachers have rich work experience as interpreters or translators for international organizations such as the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the United Nations Office at Geneva, UNESCO, ILO, WHO, etc. as well as for international conferences hosted in China.

The School offers master’s programs in English-Chinese conference interpreting, multilingual conference interpreting (English-Chinese plus German/Russian/French/Spanish/Korean/Thai) and Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) program. We also offer PhD program in translation studies and linguistics studies. At present our school has over 220 graduate students, including international students. Students have opportunities to have short-term internship visits to international organizations as well as professional interpreting and translation firms. After graduation, the majority of our students work in Chinese government bodies, foreign affairs offices in provincial and municipal governments, transnational corporations and universities.

Our School is a member of CIUTI and one of the institutions recognized by the United Nations for interpreter and translator training.

The Silk Road Research Institute

The Silk Road Research Institute of Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) was founded in 2015, with Dr. Hsin-Kang Chang, former president of City University of Hong Kong as its honorary director.

The Silk Road Research Institute aims to inform China’s Belt and Road Initiatives and serve as a bridge between China and the rest of the world by taking advantage of the multilingual and cross-cultural teaching and research expertise of BFSU.

The Research Institute aims to build itself into a think tank for the Belt and Road Initiatives and focus on thematic studies to tell China stories, spread China voices and take Chinese culture to the world. The Institute attempts to promote collaborative innovation and cross-border integration with countries along the Silk Road, carry out joint research on China’s further reform and development, and offer training and advices on relevant issues in this regard. We will strive to create a platform for cultural communications between China and countries along the Silk Road so as to contribute to the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiatives.
