Beijing Center for Japanese Studies

Beijing Center for Japanese Studies was founded in 1985. Under the guidance and support of China’s Ministry of Education and the Japan Foundation as well as the leadership of BFSU, the Center has achieved remarkable results in the past 30 years. We have produced over 1000 professionals with master’s and doctor’s degrees who specialize in teaching and research in Japanese studies.

The Center is recognized as a national level key program by the Ministry of Education, a Beijing municipal key program as well as a research base of the Ministry of Education for country and regional studies. We now have a total staff of 26, including 9 full professors, 3 associate professors and 2 lecturers, focusing on 6 major research fields: Japanese language, education, literature, culture, society and economy. Currently, the Center has 109 people enrolled in our masters’ programs, 1 Japanese student in our dual-degree program, 47 people in our PhD programs, 1 researcher doing postdoctoral research, 2 visiting scholars and 1 people in our teachers’ training program.

The Center operates its programs in partnership with our Japanese counterparts. The Japanese Foundation sends famous Japanese scholars and professors to give lectures each year. We also invite outstanding Chinese scholars as visiting professors to teach in our Center.

We have signed agreements for joint dual-degree master’s programs with Kobe University and Okayama University. At the same time, we have also signed cooperation agreements with 23 universities and research institutions including the University of Tokyo, Ochanomizu University, Waseda University, National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics, National Institute of Japanese Literature, Mie University, Nagoya University of Foreign Studies, and Shinshu University.

Our library has a total collection of about 170,000 volumes of Japanese and Chinese books, topping China’s national list both in terms of quantity and quality.
